CMS Approves Postpartum Medicaid Expansion in Additional States

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved Louisiana, Virginia, New Jersey, and Illinois’ extension of Medicaid and CHIP coverage for 12 months after pregnancy on or before April 1, 2022. CMS is also working with another eleven states and the District of Columbia to extend postpartum coverage for a full year after pregnancy, including: California, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, New Mexico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.  In addition, a number of other states have announced that they are working to extend Medicaid and CHIP coverage to 12 months after pregnancy, and CMS looks forward to working with those states. In order to receive federal funds and to ensure consistency with federal standards, including those set by the American Rescue Plan, states must go through a formal process run by CMS. Medicaid covers more than 40 percent of births in the United States; extending this coverage will bring the peace of mind of health coverage to parents and children during the vulnerable postpartum period.

CMS to Conduct  2022 Merit-based Incentive Payment System Overview Webinar

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is hosting a Quality Payment Program (QPP) webinar on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. ET. This presentation will provide an overview of the requirements for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) for the 2022 performance year. Why should midwives care about MIPS? CMS added two clinician types for MIPS eligibility for the 2022 performance year: Certified Nurse Midwives and Clinical Social Workers. As always, a key question clinicians and practices are asking themselves when preparing to participate in MIPS is: “Am I considered an ‘Eligible Clinician’? And if so, do I meet any of the exemption criteria that would allow me to avoid the penalty without participating?” Register for this webinar to learn more.
During the webinar, CMS subject matter experts will provide information on ways to participate in MIPS in 2022, including:
• MIPS eligibility requirements
• Participation requirements for traditional MIPS
• Requirements for participation in MIPS via the APM Performance Pathway (APP)
Additionally, CMS will answer questions from attendees at the end of the webinar, as time permits.
