For a number of years, the Oregon Affiliate was interested in forming a 501c3 organization that could accept charitable donations from midwives and midwifery supporters. Thanks to Helene Rippey, CNM, one of our outstanding members, and Kate Pelosi, CNM, our first Foundation President, we finally succeeded in 2012.
THE OREGON ACNM FOUNDATION
The Oregon ACNM Foundation is a nonprofit organization associated with the Oregon Affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Our Foundation was established to support the mission and purposes of the affiliate with a focus on midwifery education and leadership. Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), certified midwives (CMs), student nurse-midwives (SNMs), and other health professionals have benefited from the foundation’s support. As a 501©(3) organization, we offer individuals the opportunity to support our mission through tax-deductible donations. The Foundation operates three distinct entities:
COMPASSIONATE SUPPORT FUND
The Oregon ACNM Foundation administers compassionate support for midwives in grief or work-related distress. The fund was established in the memory of Marc Huggins, the son of our affiliate president, who died on March 20, 2015. In 2017, the Marc Huggins Compassionate Support Fund began funding subsidized or free counseling sessions, half-day small group self-care sessions, and material assistance as possible. The fund continues to expand activities and scope in response to our community’s needs. We can be contacted at email@example.com.
THE CAROL HOWE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
This fund was established to provide scholarships and other support to Oregon-based nurse-midwifery students. It is endowed by the Oregon ACNM Affiliate and other generous sponsors and supporters. The fund honors Carol Howe, CNM, DNSc, FACNM, DPNAP, FAAN, who has provided over 35 years of service to Oregon families and the midwifery community. She retired as the Director of Oregon Health and Science University’s Midwifery program in June 2015 and remains active in our midwifery community.
MARTHA BROWNING BRYANT MEMORIAL LECTURE
Martha was a treasured member of the Portland midwifery community who was tragically murdered on her way home from a birth in 1992. The Martha Browning Bryant Memorial Lecture is an annual CME event that has been held for more than 25 years to honor her memory and remember her spirit. This year’s event, Trauma-Informed Care, will be held on October 12, 2019 on the OHSU campus.
