Passing of Henry A. Thiede, MD

We are saddened to share the recent passing of Henry A. Thiede, MD. Henry was Chair of Obs/Gyn at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine from 1967-1974, during which time he was instrumental in supporting midwifery practice there as well as across the entire southeast.

In 1974, he returned to his birthplace in Rochester, NY to assume the Chair of the Department of Ob-Gyn at the University of Rochester, a position he held for 20 years. In this role, he recruited a midwife to join him and instituted midwifery practice at the university medical center to model his experience at Mississippi.

Beth Cooper, CNM shared with ACNM, “I was given the greatest opportunity of my lifetime when in 1975 Henry Thiede offered me a position on the medical school faculty at the University of Rochester, which I held until my retirement as Professor Emeritus in Ob-Gyn in 2014. My life began a direction I could never have imagined, thanks to his mentoring and friendship.”

Dr. Thiede was an active member of various Professional organizations, including past President of both the American Gynecological Obstetrical Society (AGOS) and the Urogynecological Society. Dr. Thiede was a veteran, having served in the US Army. Additionally, Dr. Thiede was a long-time member of Oak Hill Country Club.

For his many contributions to midwifery, Dr. Thiede was granted an ACNM Honorary Membership.
