ACNM is pleased to welcome Angela Smith as the new Executive Director of the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). In her new role, she will serve as the chief executive officer and be responsible for effectively conducting the affairs of the agency and assisting ACME board leaders in advancing the agency’s mission, goals, and strategic objectives. Angela brings over 15 years of association management and accreditation experience to her new role. As a passionate advocate, she has devoted her professional career to helping organizations fulfill their missions by ensuring that programs and services are delivered with respect to the highest level of quality.

Prior to joining ACME, Angela served as the Deputy Executive Director for an international membership organization, leading their higher education and community and school-based accreditation programs. In partnership with the Accreditation Council, she provided leadership, vision, and direction for the accreditation framework, policies, and procedures, review processes, and the development of quality standards. Under her leadership, the accreditation efforts were streamlined to ensure applicants could effectively and efficiently navigate the process and adhere to the highest level of quality.

In addition, she previously served as a senior leader at the National Head Start Association (NHSA). During her tenure at NHSA, she increased the quality of professional development programs and other workforce development solutions. She also managed the Quality Initiative Program (QIP) that recognized high quality center-based programs that provided services to children and their families. QIP included a rigorous review of program operations and services against a set of quality standards. Programs that earned the QIP distinction demonstrated a commitment to quality, growth, and outcomes-based service delivery.

Over the years, Angela has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and high quality by making contributions across many areas and by answering calls to action. Angela served on former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine’s Strong Start professional development and quality standards workgroup, and completed the Nike Leadership Training for gold star Head Start leaders. To advance quality program delivery, she has served on various national task forces, committees, and advisory panels, including but not limited to, Sesame Street, NAEYC, Casey Family and Foster Care, and Eco-Healthy Child Care. Angela is a proud graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park.
